About

In 1955, my grandfather opened the first Cavallo’s Deli. In 1968 he opened another

location for each of his five sons here in Waterbury. My grandfather was the proud owner

of our location 1892 East Main St Waterbury, where we are still cooking today!

Cavallo’s Imported Italian Foods is an iconic Italian haunt to many.

Being part of the communities in which they stand, Cavallo’s does Italian right – with deep roots and good food. With it's catering and daily specials to enjoy there or to-go, Cavallo’s brings delicious delights
and satiated smiles to first time customers, loyal locals, and everyone in between.
Whether you are hankering for a hot meal, a deli delight, or an Italian confection – think
cookies, pastries, cakes, and pies (Oh My!) - , Cavallo’s will calm all cravings.
Cavallo’s marked its 50 th Anniversary back in 2018. Their philosophy is clear;

“It’s simple. Serve great Italian food. Treat people like family. Our name is our reputation.”

Now, at 54 years young, we join the community in continuing to celebrate Cavallo’s for
the comfort, community, and character they provide. For Lena, it’s personal. “I am a first-generation American with 100% Italian roots. I speak the language. I understand the culture, and I know the traditions. I work hard for our community and families, and I hope to pass that on to my son.”

Lena Hassinger, the granddaughter of Cavallo’s original proprietor who opened the East
Main Street, Waterbury locale back in 1968, was born part Cavallo on her mom’s side
and continues the legacy that is Cavallo’s with her mom, Maria Cavallo Fusco. As a
college graduate with a degree in neurobiology, Lena is taking the mind-gut connection
to a whole new level. “When you love what you do, it isn’t work. Food has a way of
bringing people together; and in our shop, our girls are family. We laugh, cry, and make
great memories together on a daily basis.”

With so much joy coming from its insides, it’s no wonder Cavallo’s has become a
generational favorite and it’s being part of the generations that brings both bliss and
pride. “We love sharing the excitement of the neighborhood grandma that comes in with
the grandkids or catering a wedding for the girl next door who has been coming in since
she was a child.” Nostalgia for Cavallo’s is not happenstance. It’s been cultivated with purpose and
shared with reverence and love. Good food has the power of uniting families,
communities, even strangers. Good Italian food made with good Italian love….now
that’s some powerful stuff. And Cavallo’s brings its A game!
